Our Story
Benvenuti. At The Italian Barrel, we invite you to slow down and savor.
Discover Our Story
Tucked at the quiet edge of the French Quarter — just steps from Frenchmen Street and directly across from the New Orleans Jazz Museum outdoor stages — The Italian Barrel offers a romantic, transportive dining experience rooted in the Slow Food traditions of Northern Italy.
Inside our softly lit dining room or beneath the glow of our heated sidewalk tables, time slows down. Conversation lingers. Wine flows. And every detail — from the imported ingredients to the candlelight on your table — is designed to make the evening unforgettable.
Our menu showcases the elegance and depth of Northern Italian cuisine: refined, seasonal, and crafted with exceptional ingredients sourced from across Italy. From our signature lobster ravioli to pumpkin ravioli in sage brown butter, every dish honors tradition while inviting you to savor the present.
The kitchen remains under the leadership of founding Chef Samantha Castagnetti, whose culinary roots in Northern Italy shaped the restaurant’s identity. Today, the restaurant is lovingly stewarded by longtime guests and now owners Lori and Kevin Cates, who bring decades of hospitality experience and a deep personal connection to The Italian Barrel — including the night they got engaged here.
Our curated Italian wine list highlights expressive producers from Piemonte, Friuli, Veneto, Campania, and beyond — pairing beautifully with every course. And at the bar, our cocktail program blends heritage with invention: house-aged Negronis, clarified cordials, and distinctive creations like The Olive Branch (olive oil-washed gin and bergamot) and The Butcher’s Sazerac (washed with 24-month-aged Parma prosciutto).
Guests often find us by chance — and leave with lasting impressions:
“A hidden gem…”
“Every bite was a love letter to Italy.”
“The most romantic meal of our trip.”
Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, we invite you to raise a glass, settle in, and savor every moment.
